Protect Holiday Smiles and Keep Festivities Moving

November 16, 2025

From cookie swaps to road trips, the season piles on moments that matter—and the occasional tooth surprise. A simple, family-ready plan keeps small issues from hijacking the day, helping your crew keep festivities moving until professional care is in reach.

Follow the Calm-Clean-Cool Rule

  • Calm: Take a breath so kids take their cue from you.

  • Clean: Have the person gently rinse with clean water to clear debris.

  • Cool: Place a cold compress on the cheek in short intervals to limit puffiness.

Skip aspirin on gums and avoid heat; both can irritate tissues.

Chips, Cracks, and Jagged Edges

Collect any fragments in a clean container. If a sharp edge is scraping the tongue or cheek, cover it with orthodontic wax. Choose soft foods, chew on the opposite side, and steer clear of brittle snacks until the tooth is evaluated. Avoid quick-fix glues—those belong nowhere near the mouth.

If a Permanent Tooth Gets Knocked Out

Handle the tooth by the crown (chewing end), not the root. Briefly rinse with water if needed—no scrubbing. If it seats easily, gently place it back into the socket and bite on clean gauze to stabilize. If reinsertion isn't possible, keep it moist in milk or a tooth-preservation solution and seek urgent care. Do not reinsert primary (baby) teeth.

When a Filling or Crown Comes Loose

Sticky caramels and crunchy nuts can pull restorations free. For temporary comfort, place pharmacy-grade temporary dental material or a small piece of sugar-free gum over the area. If a crown still fits, a tiny dab of temporary cement can hold it until your visit—never force it and never use household adhesives. Avoid chewing on that side.

Ache, Pressure, or Puffy Gums

Gently floss to dislodge trapped food that can trigger throbbing. Rinse with clean water. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help when taken as directed. Call promptly if you notice facial swelling, fever, a pimple-like bump on the gums, trouble swallowing, or pain that wakes you at night.

Orthodontic Issues

Cover a poking wire with orthodontic wax; don't trim it yourself. If a bracket loosens, leave it in place and contact your dental team. If an aligner cracks, step back to the previous tray and follow your provider's guidance before advancing.

Pack a Pocket "Smile Go-Bag"

Stash orthodontic wax, sterile gauze, single-use gloves, a clean lidded container, temporary dental material, a travel toothbrush and floss, and your dentist's number saved in every traveler's phone.
